Keith Hampton is a Professor in the Department of Media & Information at Michigan State University (MSU). He previously held roles such as Endowed Professor in Communication and Public Policy at Rutgers University, Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Annenberg School for Communication, and Assistant Professor at MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning. His research focuses on the intersection of digital technologies, social networks, democratic engagement, and urban environments. Hampton holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Toronto and a BA (Hons.) in Sociology from the University of Calgary.
His research interests include analyzing how digital media shapes social interaction, community dynamics, and civic participation. He explores topics such as the impact of social media on psychological distress, network instability, and the evolving social life of urban public spaces. Hampton has also directed studies on broadband connectivity’s role in educational disparities, particularly in rural areas.
As Director for Academic Research at the Quello Center, he leads initiatives examining digital media’s societal implications. His work challenges assumptions about technology’s role in community decline, arguing that new communication technologies can sustain and redefine communal bonds. Notable contributions include studies on social media’s effects on political discourse, social support, and the ‘cost of caring’ in digital environments.
Hampton’s publications span journals like Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, Sociological Focus, and Urban Studies. He has collaborated on projects such as the Pew Research Center’s studies on social media and public discourse. His research bridges sociology, urban studies, and media theory, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding modern digital societies.
