Dr. Keith Kowalkowski is an Assistant Department Chair and Professor in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Lawrence Technological University. He holds a Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from Purdue University and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Michigan State University. His career spans academia and industry, with prior work at Ruby and Associates, Inc. (2005-2010) focusing on steel design, finite element analysis, and constructability.
- Ph.D., Structural Engineering, Purdue University
- B.S., Civil Engineering, Michigan State University
Dr. Kowalkowski’s research centers on structural engineering, particularly:
- Steel connection design and fire resistance
- Residual stress effects from heat treatments
- Finite element modeling of composite materials
- Thermomechanical behavior of military-grade composites
- Structural dynamics and serviceability
- Fire testing protocols for armored vehicles
His Google Scholar publications (2004-2013) demonstrate sustained focus on steel repair methodologies, composite material properties, and military structural applications. Key projects include developing U.S. Army fire safety guidelines and directing Lawrence Tech’s Fire Testing Facility.
Scientific Affiliations:
- American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)
- American Concrete Institute (ACI)
- American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)
- Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI)
- Structural Engineering Association of Michigan (SEAMi)
As director of civil engineering graduate programs (M.S., M.C.E.M., Ph.D.) and the 5-year direct entry M.S. in Architectural Engineering, Dr. Kowalkowski oversees academic operations while advancing industry-sponsored research in structural resilience and material behavior.
