Kayleigh Garthwaite is an Associate Professor at the University of Birmingham's Department of Social Policy, Sociology and Criminology, and Deputy Director of Research (Impact) at the School of Social Policy and Society. A Birmingham Fellow, her work focuses on poverty, inequality, social security, and food insecurity, employing interdisciplinary methods like ethnography and participatory research. She co-founded the Global Solidarity Alliance for Food, Health, and Social Justice to combat corporate capture of charitable food systems.
Education: BA Sociology (Durham University, 2007), MA Social Research Methods (Durham, 2009), PhD Human Geography (Durham, 2012), Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (Birmingham, 2020).
Research interests span charitable food provision, stigma, and austerity's impacts. Her work bridges social policy, sociology, and human geography, with a focus on qualitative methodologies. Key projects include studies on foodbank use, pandemic poverty experiences, and transnational food insecurity.
Key awards include the 2020 Philip Leverhulme Prize and multiple British Academy Peter Townsend Awards. Her findings have influenced policy debates, appearing in media like BBC News and The Guardian. She advises policy bodies and collaborates with NGOs, grassroots activists, and international scholars.
Teaching: Leads modules on poverty, inequality, and research methods at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Supervises PhD students and mentors early-career researchers globally.
