Katrina Hutchison is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at Macquarie University's School of Humanities, where she contributes to the Ethics and Agency Research Centre. Her academic work bridges feminist philosophy and bioethics, with a particular focus on gender issues in surgical careers and academic philosophy.
Dr. Hutchison's research interests span feminist philosophy, bioethics, and moral psychology. She investigates gender bias, particularly the underrepresentation of women in surgical careers and academic philosophy. Her influential work includes co-editing 'Women in Philosophy: What Needs to Change?' (Oxford University Press, 2013), which has informed efforts to improve the climate for women in philosophy. She also conducts significant research in surgical ethics, including the ethics of innovative surgical procedures and implantable medical devices. Her work often combines qualitative empirical methods with traditional analytic philosophy to address real-world ethical challenges.
Her publication record shows a consistent focus on ethical issues at the intersection of gender, medicine, and knowledge production. Recent work examines epistemic injustice, Dalit feminism, surgical robotics frameworks, and surveillance ethics during public health emergencies. This demonstrates her ability to address both theoretical philosophical questions and practical ethical challenges in healthcare settings.
Dr. Hutchison leads and participates in several significant research projects, including the ARC DECRA project 'The impact of micro gender biases on women's careers: the case of surgery' (2020-2022) and the British Academy-funded 'Gender and the Impulse to Innovate' study. She is also a member of the Macquarie University Research Centre for Agency, Values and Ethics (CAVE) and serves as an Associate Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science.
