Sarah Sorial is a Professor of Law and Deputy Dean (Research and Innovation) at Macquarie University's Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on the intersection of philosophy and law, particularly free speech regulation, hate speech, democratic deliberation, and emotions in legal contexts. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from UNSW and undergraduate degrees in Philosophy and Law from Macquarie University.
Her work includes analyzing sedition laws, foreign influence legislation, and constitutional reform via citizen assemblies. She has supervised HDR students in political philosophy and philosophy of law. Current affiliations include the Ethics and Agency Research Centre and the Macquarie University Centre for Agency Values and Ethics (CAVE).
Recent projects include MQ Restart (2020-2020) on democratic literacy and CAVE (2020-2022), exploring agency and ethics. Her publications address topics like mini-publics' legitimacy, foreign interference's chilling effects, and balancing public servants' free speech rights.
