Professor Katie Sykes is a faculty member at Thompson Rivers University's Faculty of Law, specializing in animal law, legal innovation, and international trade law. She holds a JD from the University of Toronto (gold medallist), LLMs from Harvard and Dalhousie Universities, and a PhD from Dalhousie. Her research focuses on the intersection of animal welfare and global trade, legal technology, and online dispute resolution. She leads a major SSHRC-funded project on British Columbia’s Civil Resolution Tribunal. She teaches Tort Law, Animals and the Law, and Legal Expert Systems design.

Research Interests: Animal law, legal technology for access to justice, international trade law, and the future of legal practice. Her work includes designing AI-driven legal apps and analyzing WTO disputes involving animal welfare standards. Recent projects explore online courts and cetacean captivity laws.
