Kathleen A. Wellman is the Dedman Family Distinguished Professor and Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Clements Department of History at Southern Methodist University (SMU). Her work bridges early modern French history, the history of science, and cultural studies, with a focus on the intersection of science, gender, and power. She earned a B.A. from the University of New Orleans (1973), M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1974, 1983).
Her research explores topics including the role of women (queens and mistresses) in shaping French Renaissance politics and culture, the cultural context of early modern scientific discourse, and the intellectual foundations of the Enlightenment. Notable works include Queens and Mistresses of Renaissance France (2013), La Mettrie: Medicine, Philosophy, and Enlightenment (1992), and Making Science Social (2003).
Wellman has received numerous awards, including the President’s Associates Outstanding Faculty Award (2001-02), NEH Fellowships (1996-97), and recognition for teaching excellence. Her scholarship emphasizes the cultural frameworks that shaped scientific and philosophical thought in early modern Europe.
