Katherine Knobloch is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Colorado State University and serves as Associate Director of the Center for Public Deliberation. Her work focuses on public participation, deliberative democracy, and community engagement program design. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Washington and degrees from Louisiana State University. Knobloch has secured National Science Foundation funding for projects like the Citizens’ Initiative Review expansion and deliberative pedagogy in chemistry education. She leads initiatives such as Community Guides (Fort Collins), The Community Collaborative (Louisiana), and Public Achievement (Poudre School District), which train civic leaders and students in deliberative techniques to address equity and inclusion challenges.
Her research emphasizes democratic innovation and the impact of participatory processes on political efficacy and decision-making. Notable collaborations include work with the Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs and Poudre School District. Knobloch’s publications span journals like Journal of Deliberative Democracy and Political Studies, with a focus on evaluating deliberative institutions and their societal effects. She co-authored Hope for Democracy (Oxford, 2020), exploring pathways to restore reasoned political discourse.
Knobloch’s projects often center underrepresented communities in public decision-making, blending academic research with practical civic engagement. Her NSF-funded research assesses how deliberative methods improve voter information and shape electoral outcomes.
