John Gastil is Distinguished Professor of Communication Arts and Sciences, Public Policy, and Political Science at Pennsylvania State University, with joint appointments in the College of the Liberal Arts. He holds a B.A. from Swarthmore College (1989), M.A. (1991) and Ph.D. (1994) from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Previously, he served at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1986-2004) and University of Leiden (2004-2010).
Gastil's research examines political deliberation, group decision-making, democratic innovations, and civic engagement. He directs the Democracy Machine project developing online deliberation platforms and pioneered the Citizens’ Initiative Review process improving ballot measure comprehension. His work integrates political communication, democratic theory, and public policy.
Recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate consistent focus on deliberative democracy innovations:

Gastil has authored influential books including Hope for Democracy: How Citizens Can Bring Reason Back into Politics (Oxford, 2020), Legislature by Lot: Transformative Designs for Deliberative Governance (Verso, 2019), and The Jury and Democracy: How Jury Deliberation Promotes Civic Engagement (Oxford, 2010). His research has been supported by NSF grants and recognized through editorial positions at Journal of Politics (Editor, 1997-2001) and other leading journals.
