Dr. Kate Weiner is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Sheffield's School of Sociological Studies, Politics and International Relations, and Director of Post-Graduate Research. She holds a BSc, MA, and PhD. Her research bridges medical sociology and science and technology studies, focusing on biomedical knowledge, lay-professional interactions, and health technologies. Key interests include self-monitoring devices, pharmaceutical practices, and epigenetics' social implications.
Dr. Weiner has investigated genetics (e.g., familial hypercholesterolemia), cholesterol management via functional foods, and racialized prescribing. Recent projects explore digital self-tracking and health infrastructures. She has secured grants from Leverhulme Trust, ESRC, and Wellcome Trust for studies on self-monitoring, epigenetics, and racial categories in medicine.
Teaching includes modules on social research and digital health. She oversees PhD students researching topics like digital health campaigns in Saudi Arabia and minoritized blood cancer patients' support networks. The House of Tracking, an interactive tool from her 'Tracking Ourselves' project, highlights self-monitoring practices. Her work critiques 'self-care' paradigms, advocating practice theory and care infrastructure frameworks.
