Professor Paula Saukko serves as Professor of Social Science and Medicine and Research and Innovation Director for Criminology, Sociology & Social Policy at Loughborough University, where she has been based since 2007 after prior positions at the University of Leicester and University of Exeter.
Her educational qualifications include:
- PhD in Communications from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (USA)
- MSc from University of Tampere (Finland)
- First degree in Journalism from University of Tampere
Her research critically bridges sociology, communication, and health studies through innovative methodologies analyzing lived experiences. Early work examined anorexia discourses leading to monographs Doing Research in Cultural Studies (Sage 2003) and The Anorexic Self (SUNY Press 2008). Current projects investigate digital media's impact on mental health, health inequalities, and eating disorders, including a recent social media guide co-produced with charity Beat.
Funding for her NHS-collaborative research on genetic technologies, cardiovascular risk assessment, and antibiotic prescribing has been secured from ESRC, Wellcome Trust, Department of Health, and EPSRC. She supervises research students in health sociology and digital media studies while directing departmental innovation initiatives.
