Dr Kasia Mika is a Senior Lecturer in Comparative Literature at Queen Mary University of London’s School of Languages, Linguistics and Film. Previously, she held positions at the University of Amsterdam and KITLV in Comparative Caribbean Studies. Her research focuses on socially urgent topics such as disaster studies, environmental humanities, and postcolonial theory. She explores crisis, vulnerability, and futures through literature, film, and visual art, emphasizing creativity’s role in understanding global challenges.
Her monograph Disasters, Vulnerability, and Narratives: Writing Haiti’s Futures (2019) analyzes narrative responses to the 2010 Haiti earthquake, introducing concepts like 'hinged chronologies' and 'slow healing.' She co-produced the award-winning documentary Intranqu’îllités (2019), which explores Haitian art post-earthquake. Mika’s work bridges academia and public engagement, advocating for critical pedagogy and inclusive dialogue in teaching.
Research interests include Haitian and Caribbean studies, environmental justice, and the intersections of disaster and postcolonialism. Her publications span journals like Area, Journal of Haitian Studies, and Callaloo, with recent work on climate change poetics and vulnerable anthropocenes. Awards include the AHRC Research in Film Award (2019).
