John Walsh III is an Associate Professor in the Department of Africana Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His work bridges Caribbean Studies, Francophone African Literature, and the Environmental Humanities, with a focus on Haiti’s literary and historical narratives.

His research explores the intersections of colonial history, French republicanism, ecological change, and social justice in the French Atlantic and Caribbean. He has authored two monographs: Free and French in the Caribbean (2013), analyzing Toussaint Louverture and Aimé Césaire, and Migration and Refuge: An Eco-Archive of Haitian Literature (2019), examining post-Duvalier and post-earthquake Haitian literature through ecocritical and transnational frameworks. He advises interdisciplinary projects on migration, transnational identity, and environmental justice, and collaborates with colleagues to organize academic events featuring prominent scholars and artists.
