Dr. Patrick Sylvain is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Humanities at Simmons University. His interdisciplinary work bridges literature, political anthropology, and postcolonial theory, with a focus on Haiti and the Haitian diaspora. He holds a PhD in English from Brandeis University, an MFA in Poetry from Boston University, an EdM in Language & Literacy from Harvard University, and a BA in Political Science and Social Psychology from the University of Massachusetts-Boston.
His research examines colonial and decolonial frameworks in the Caribbean and North America, with special attention to metaphor, structural violence, and critical race theory. Recent projects include analyzing Haitian Vodoun's zombie figure as a decolonial metaphor and interrogating Haiti's underdevelopment through historical and political lenses.
Dr. Sylvain has published widely in peer-reviewed journals such as African American Review and Agni, and his poetry collections include Underworlds (2018) and the bilingual Unfinished Dreams / Rèv San Bout (2023). He has received awards including the Harvard Derek Bok Teaching Excellence Award and the Gilmore-Valenze Dissertation Prize.
He teaches courses on global literature, human rights, and Caribbean women’s narratives. His current book projects explore Haitian identity and the political symbolism of the zombie figure in Vodoun traditions.
