Dr. Karolina Watroba is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Medieval & Modern Languages and an upcoming Lecturer in German Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on modern literature, film, and cultural reception of European modernism, with a transnational lens. She has held fellowships at All Souls College, Oxford, and the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study.
Education: BA (Magdalen College, Oxford, 2015), MSt (Magdalen College, Oxford, 2016, Ertegun Scholarship), DPhil (Merton College, Oxford, 2019, Clarendon Scholarship).
Research interests include global reception of German modernism, comparative literature, and the interplay of 'high' and 'low' culture. Notable works include Mann's Magic Mountain (2022) and Metamorphoses: In Search of Franz Kafka (2024).
Recognitions: British Academy Talent Development Award (2023), Waterloo Centre Book Prize Finalist (2022), Aquila Polonica Prize Honourable Mention (2021).
Teaching: Undergraduate/graduate courses at Oxford and the University of Reading, including modules on German literature, film, and comparative methodologies. Supervises doctoral research in German and Polish studies.
Public Engagement: Co-designed the Oxford exhibition 'Kafka: Making of an Icon,' radio contributions on BBC programs, and outreach initiatives like 'A German Classic' essay competition.
