Carla Suthren is a Stipendiary Lecturer in English at St Catherine's College, University of Oxford. Her research focuses on Classical (particularly Greek) reception and translation in the early modern period, with additional interests in Greek tragedy, Shakespeare, early modern drama, and writing by women. She holds a BA and MSt in Classics and English from Magdalen College, Oxford, and a PhD in English from the University of York. Her current monograph project, Tyrannous Passions: Shakespeare and the Renaissance Reception of Euripides, explores the intersection of Greek literature and English Renaissance studies.
Previously, she held postdoctoral roles on Subha Mukherji’s ERC-funded project at the University of Cambridge and Silvia Biglizzi’s PRIN-funded project at the University of Verona. Her interdisciplinary work emphasizes European contexts in early modern English literature. She teaches Paper 3 (English Literature 1550-1660), Paper 4 (English Literature 1660-1760), and Shakespeare-related courses.
