Dr Christoph Schmitt-Maass is a Tutor in German at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages and the Centre for Early Modern Studies. His research spans German-language literature from the 17th century to the present, with a focus on reception studies, Jansenism in German-speaking contexts, and literary criticism. He holds a PhD from the University of Basel (2007) and a Habilitation from the University of Potsdam (2017).
Teaching responsibilities include modern literature, translation studies, Early Modern Literature (Paper VII), and Franz Kafka as a prescribed author (Paper X). He supervises a PhD candidate (Sophie Forst) and contributes to the MSt/MPhil Pathway 'European Enlightenment'. Recent publications explore topics such as Jansenist reception, Leibniz's engagement with Fénelon's Télémaque, and disability representation in modernist literature. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary digital literary criticism.
Research initiatives include studies on Baroque anthology editions' cultural memory roles and pandemic narratives in Thomas Mann's work. He collaborates internationally, co-editing volumes on Central European Jansenism and Catholic Enlightenment debates. His interdisciplinary approach spans textual analysis, religious history, and comparative literature.
