Sophie Forst is a DPhil candidate in German Literature at the University of Oxford’s Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages and a Stipendiary Lecturer in German at Balliol College. She holds a BA in German Language and Literature/Philosophy from Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and an MSt in Modern Languages from Oxford. Her research focuses on re-examining conceptions of moral and social progress in the German Enlightenment, supervised by Prof. Barry Murnane and Dr. Christoph Schmitt-Maass. She was a Visiting Assistant in Research at Yale University (2023–2024).
Her work bridges philosophical and literary analysis, emphasizing how Enlightenment-era dramas critique oppressive social mechanisms. Key research interests include feminist perspectives in Enlightenment thought, aesthetic theory, and the interplay between morality and art. She has received prestigious scholarships, including the Balliol College Scholarship and Lidl Graduate Modern Languages Scholarship.
