Barry Murnane is an Associate Professor in German and Fellow of St John's College at the University of Oxford. He holds dual affiliations with the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages and St John's College. His research focuses on German literature and culture from the 18th century to the present, with specialties in Gothic/fantastic literature, Kafka studies, and interdisciplinary fields like Medical Humanities and Posthumanism. Murnane is Co-Director of the Oxford Kafka Research Centre and a Co-Investigator on the AHRC-funded 'Kafka's Transformative Communities' project. He collaborates with non-academic partners, such as the Royal Ballet and Science Museum London, to produce public engagement initiatives like the 'Choreographing Kafka' dance adaptation.
His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate levels, including modules on 'Literature and Medicine' and 'Bildungsroman'. He supervises doctoral students researching topics from Enlightenment solitude to Brecht's French reception. Murnane's recent work explores Kafka's legacy, Gothic modernism, and the Anthropocene through German Romanticism. He is an external member of the DFG-funded Graduiertenkolleg at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg.
His articles analyze Gothic tropes, Kafka's posthuman themes, and transnational literary networks. Key projects include the 'Kafka. Making of an Icon' exhibition (2024–2025) and collaborative ventures with institutions like the Morgan Library. His interdisciplinary approach bridges literature, science, and performance, reflecting his commitment to innovative scholarly outreach.
