Karl Smith serves as Falcon Media Manager for Bowling Green State University's School of Media & Communication and teaches as an adjunct instructor in journalism. He holds a B.A. in News-Editorial Journalism from BGSU and an M.B.A. in Entrepreneurial Management from Eastern University.
His career spans over 20 years in media leadership roles, including managing editor, news design director, and digital transformation leader at Calkins Media. He pioneered hyperlocal news sites for AOL/Patch and led content strategy for the International Fresh Produce Association. Smith has also taught at Monmouth, Rutgers, and Valley Forge Universities.
Research interests center on media innovation, journalism education, and strategic content development. His professional workshops focus on newsroom management, design, and data-driven marketing analytics.
Publications include Anchored in Tradition (on U.S. Naval Academy) and Bringing Catie Home (memoir about repatriating his daughter from China). An upcoming book Flying High, Diving Deep explores parenting military academy students.
