Harriet Brown is a Professor of Magazine Journalism and Director of the Magazine, News and Digital Journalism Graduate Program at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She also co-directs the Fashion and Beauty Communications program. Her work spans journalism, memoir writing, and anthology editing, focusing on topics such as body image, mental health, and family dynamics. Brown has authored multiple acclaimed books, including Shadow Daughter: A Memoir of Estrangement (2018) and Brave Girl Eating: A Family's Struggle with Anorexia (2010), which won a Books for a Better Life Award. She has been recognized with the John F. Murray Award for Strategic Communication (2011) and has spoken widely on media and health issues. Her research explores the intersections of personal narrative, cultural stigma, and scientific inquiry, often blending journalism with memoir. Brown has contributed to The New York Times Magazine, O Magazine, Vogue, and other publications.
