Eric Grode is an Associate Professor at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, holding dual roles in the Goldring Arts, Style and Culture Journalism program and the Magazine, News and Digital Journalism department. He has been affiliated with Goldring since 2007 and previously taught at Lehman College and the University of Rochester Medical School. Grode is a prominent theater critic and journalist, contributing to outlets like The New York Times, The Village Voice, and The Wall Street Journal. His work focuses on theater criticism, cultural journalism, and media industry analysis.
He has authored two books: Hair: The Story of the Show That Defined a Generation and The Book of Broadway: The 150 Definitive Plays and Musicals. Grode has received fellowships from American Theatre magazine and the American Theater Critics Association. His career includes editorial roles at TV Guide, Good Housekeeping, and XXL, where he served as managing editor. He also previously held leadership roles in the New York Drama Critics Circle.
Grode's research and teaching emphasize the intersection of arts journalism and cultural critique. His publications reflect a deep engagement with theater history, Broadway’s cultural significance, and the evolving landscape of media storytelling.
