Karen L. Mapp is a Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), specializing in education policy, family-school partnerships, and community engagement. She holds an Ed.D. and M.Ed. from HGSE, alongside degrees from Trinity College and Southern Connecticut State University. Mapp’s 25-year career focuses on cultivating collaborative relationships between families, communities, and educators to drive student success and school improvement.
Her roles include former Faculty Director of HGSE’s Education, Policy, and Management (EPM) program (2008–2022) and Deputy Superintendent for Family and Community Engagement in Boston Public Schools (2003–2005). She co-founded the District Leaders Network on Family and Community Engagement and serves on boards such as the National Association for Family, School, and Community Engagement and The Hyams Foundation. Mapp also advised the U.S. Department of Education on family engagement frameworks, including the Dual Capacity-Building Framework.
Her research emphasizes evidence-based practices for equitable family-school partnerships, with key contributions like Beyond the Bake Sale (2010) and Everyone Wins! (2022). Articles highlight themes of policy analysis, community organizing, and systemic reform. Mapp’s work bridges academia and practice through her consultancy, Karen L. Mapp & Associates, which focuses on organizational capacity-building for effective engagement strategies.
