Dr. Karen E. Porter is a Reader in Cardiovascular Cell Biology at the University of Leeds, part of the School of Medicine within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. Her research focuses on understanding vascular dysfunction in diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, particularly exploring epigenetic mechanisms and cell biology. She holds a BSc in Pharmacology from Leeds and a PhD in Vascular Biology from the University of Leicester (1995).
Current roles include Programme Lead for the 4-year International PhD Academy in LICAMM, Lead Postgraduate Tutor, and Chair of the British Society for Cardiovascular Research (2018–2020). Her work integrates basic science with clinical collaboration, addressing abdominal aortic aneurysm, vein bypass graft failure, and diabetic vascular complications. She has secured major grants from BHF, EPSRC, Diabetes UK, and others.
Key achievements include establishing a human cardiovascular cell laboratory and discoveries linking epigenetic changes to diabetic vascular dysfunction. She mentors junior researchers, teaches undergraduate and postgraduate students, and collaborates across disciplines including engineering and clinical medicine.
