معرفی
Marc Bailey is an Associate Professor of Vascular Medicine at the School of Medicine, University of Leeds, affiliated with the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM). He holds an Honorary NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer role and leads research in vascular biology, particularly abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and vascular smooth muscle cell function. He is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and mentors clinical academic trainees.
Education:
- BSc (Hons) in Anatomy, University of Leeds
- MB ChB (Hons), University of Leeds
- PhD in Ion Channels and Vascular Disease, University of Leeds
- PGCert in Medical Research, University of Leeds
- MRCS, Royal College of Surgeons of England
Marc Bailey's research centers on the vascular biology of abdominal aortic aneurysm, focusing on vascular smooth muscle cells and calcium signaling pathways. His work aims to identify novel therapeutic targets to slow disease progression and avoid surgical intervention. He applies findings from AAA research to broader cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiac failure. His expertise spans ion channels, pre-clinical imaging, and translational medicine, supported by grants from BHF, MRC, and EPSRC.
His recent publications reflect a strong trend in understanding Orai1 ion channels in vascular disease, using CT angiography and murine models to study disease severity and progression. The work integrates genetics, imaging, and molecular mechanisms to develop medical therapies. Keywords across his work include vascular biology, calcium signaling, and translational cardiovascular research.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- BHF Clinical Research Training Fellowship
- NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in Vascular Surgery
- Circulation Foundation / Royal College of Surgeons of England Surgeon Scientist Fellow
- BHF Intermediate Clinical Research Fellowship
Marc Bailey has secured multiple competitive research grants from the BHF, MRC, and EPSRC. He supervises several postgraduate researchers and clinical fellows, including PDRA staff and doctoral candidates. He mentors NIHR clinical academic trainees and contributes to the BHF-funded 4-year PhD programme. His leadership roles include ePIC Modality Lead for Optical Imaging & Ultrasound and LICAMM Action Group Lead for Communications, Events & Alumni.
He is a key member of the Leeds Institute of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Medicine (LICAMM) and the Multidisciplinary Cardiovascular Research Centre. His research group includes postdoctoral researchers and clinical fellows working on Orai1, vascular imaging, and disease mechanisms. The team fosters interdisciplinary collaboration between medicine, engineering, and biology to advance cardiovascular therapeutics.
