Jürgen Basedow

Jürgen Basedow was a prominent academic and legal scholar specializing in Private International Law, European Law, and Competition Law. He served as a Professor of Law at the University of Augsburg (1987–1995), the Free University of Berlin (1995–1997), and concurrently as Director of the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg since 1997 while holding a professorship at the University of Hamburg. His academic career included visiting professorships at universities worldwide, including New York University and Oxford.

Basedow’s research focused on Private International Law, European Private and Economic Law, Insurance Law, Maritime Law, and Competition Law. He contributed significantly to legal harmonization across Europe, particularly in insurance contract law and competition policy. His work emphasized interdisciplinary approaches, bridging legal and economic perspectives.

He held numerous leadership roles, including Dean of the Faculty of Law at Augsburg University (1993–1994), Secretary General of the International Academy of Comparative Law (2006–2014), and President of the International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law (2006–2008). He was also a member of prestigious institutions like the American Law Institute and the Academia Europaea.

Basedow received multiple honors, including the Otto-Hahn-Medal (1979), honorary doctorates from institutions such as the University of Stockholm and Leuphana University, and the Kurt-Hartwig-Siemers Award. His legacy includes foundational contributions to European legal frameworks and international academic collaboration.
