Dr. Juyoung Katherine Shim is an Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA Augusta Campus), based in Jewett Hall. She teaches undergraduate courses in anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, and pathophysiology. Her research focuses on environmental toxicology, aging biology, and gene regulation mechanisms, particularly using C. elegans and zebrafish models. She holds a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Maine (2013-2018) and a BS in Biochemistry from Bates College (2001-2005), alongside a BA in English from Hankook University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, South Korea.
Research Highlights: Dr. Shim investigates how environmental toxins like triclosan and arsenic disrupt cellular processes, including mast cell signaling, mitochondrial function, and immune responses. Her work uses innovative approaches like super-resolution microscopy and zebrafish models to study these effects. Recent studies have explored triclosan’s role as a mitochondrial uncoupler and its suppression of phospholipase D pathways in mast cells.
Teaching & Outreach: In addition to her research, Dr. Shim is dedicated to STEM education, mentoring students in Maine’s outdoor-centric academic environment. She aims to bridge toxicology and aging research to understand adaptive responses that preserve tissue health. Her work frequently collaborates with institutions like the MDI Biological Laboratory and involves interdisciplinary teams across immunology, virology, and developmental biology.
