معرفی
Jae-Kyung Shim is a Professor in the Department of Bioindustry and Bioresource Engineering at Sejong University, South Korea, where she has maintained continuous academic appointments since 2003. Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms of cellular signaling and gene expression regulation with particular emphasis on nuclear processes.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. from KAIST (2000), an M.S. from Yonsei University (1994), and a B.S. from Yonsei University (1991). Prior to joining Sejong University, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UCSD's Department of Pharmacology (1999-2003) and held research positions at Korea University and Hanhyo Institutes of Technology.
Dr. Shim's research interests center on the molecular mechanisms of cellular signaling pathways, particularly focusing on the Notch signaling pathway, STAT3 signaling, and the role of nuclear membrane proteins like Emerin. She investigates how proteins such as YTHDF2 regulate mRNA stability and influence cellular processes including cancer development, muscle formation, and stress responses. Her laboratory employs various model systems including mammalian cell cultures, zebrafish, and plant models to elucidate fundamental biological processes.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals consistent focus on nuclear signaling mechanisms, particularly the interplay between Notch and STAT3 pathways, mRNA regulation through YTH domain proteins, and the spatial organization of signaling components within the nuclear membrane. Her work spans multiple biological systems from human cell lines to plant models, demonstrating interdisciplinary approach to fundamental cellular mechanisms.
Her notable research achievements include securing prestigious awards from the Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP), including both a Post Doctoral Fellowship and a Career Development Award. These accomplishments highlight the international recognition of her research contributions in molecular and cellular biology.
Dr. Shim teaches courses including Antibody Engineering, General Biochemistry, and Biopolymer Engineering at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Her Molecular and Cellular Biology Laboratory focuses on understanding disease mechanisms and protein networks in the nucleus in response to external stimuli, providing research opportunities for students interested in cutting-edge molecular biology techniques.
