Suzanne Angeli is an Assistant Professor of Molecular & Cellular Biology at the University of Maine, affiliated with the Graduate School of Biomedical Science and Engineering. Her research focuses on aging mechanisms, mitochondrial biology, and stress responses using the C. elegans model organism. She holds a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Tulane University (2003) and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of California, San Francisco (2010). Her postdoctoral work explored aging's role in neurodegenerative diseases.
Dr. Angeli's lab investigates how mitochondrial stress responses influence aging, particularly through studies on protein aggregation, mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt), and longevity pathways. Her work integrates molecular genetics, proteomics, and systems biology approaches. Notable contributions include studies on manganese toxicity, mitochondrial morphology tracking via aco-2::GFP, and drug discovery for age-related neurodegeneration.
Her research has been published in PLoS ONE, Aging, Metallomics, and eLife. Key themes across her publications include understanding proteotoxic stress, developing novel experimental tools for lifespan analysis, and exploring mitochondrial dysfunction in aging. The lab collaborates widely, leveraging Maine's biomedical research networks including the Jackson Laboratory and MDI Biological Laboratory.
Dr. Angeli is actively involved in training Ph.D. students through the GSBSE program, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to biomedical science. Her work bridges basic research with translational applications targeting age-related diseases.
