Dr Justin Morey serves as a University Teacher (equivalent to Lecturer) in Global Music Industries and Management within the School of Languages, Arts and Societies at the University of Sheffield. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), he brings extensive industry experience from co-founding London's Mother Digital Studio (1995-2003) and prior academic roles at Leeds Beckett University (2009-2023), Leeds Conservatoire, and Confetti Studios.
His educational credentials include a BA (Hons), Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE), and PhD awarded in 2017 for his thesis 'A Study of Sampling Practice in British Dance Music, 1987-2012'.
Dr Morey's research critically examines digital sampling practices, copyright law implications, and creative production methodologies in electronic music. His current work expands into ecological soundscape composition, integrating wildlife field recordings, conservation interviews, and site-specific audio installations, exemplified by the 2023 premiere of 'Spurn: Shifting Sands, Shifting Sounds'.
His publication trajectory (2012-2021) reveals persistent investigation into how legal frameworks and technological shifts reshape artistic creation in UK dance music, with increasing emphasis on historical context and future sustainability of sampling practices.
