Dr. Julie Park is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Asian American Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. She serves as Associate Chair of the Sociology Department and previously led the Asian American Studies Program (2017–2022). Her research focuses on immigrant adaptation, intergenerational mobility, and residential segregation, bridging demography, urban studies, and racial inequality. She holds a Ph.D. (2003) and M.A. (2001) in Sociology from USC, along with an M.Pl. in Urban Planning (1998) and a B.A. in Sociology (1994) from UC Davis.
Her work examines socioeconomic progress among immigrants, cohort-based intergenerational mobility analysis, and shifting patterns of residential segregation in gateway cities. Notable awards include the 2018 Donna B. Hamilton Teaching Excellence Award and 2015 Excellence in Teaching Award. She contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives like the Maryland Population Research Center and UMD’s Center for Global Migration Studies.
Her teaching spans immigration studies, social demography, and Asian American public policy. Recent publications address higher education equity, test-optional admissions, and STEM retention challenges for underrepresented groups. Her research consistently bridges empirical rigor with policy relevance, emphasizing structural barriers faced by marginalized communities.
