Julian Richards is a Teaching Professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick. He specializes in Performance Studies, with a focus on Shakespearean theatre and its historical and cultural contexts.

His research centers on the work of Glen Byam Shaw, particularly his Shakespeare productions and tenure as artistic director of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in the 1950s. He also explores post-war interpretations of Shakespeare, military contexts in theatre, and the use of drama to address oppression and trauma. Additional interests include race, age, and gender-conscious casting in classical adaptations.
Julian teaches undergraduate courses including Shakespeare and Selected Dramatists of His Time, Medieval and Early Modern Literature, and has previously led seminars on European theatre, Shakespearean performance, and drama in democratic societies.
