Julian M. Somers is a SFU Distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University (SFU), where he holds a Full Professorship. He completed his BA at SFU and MSc/PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Washington. Dr. Somers has held leadership roles, including Director of the UBC Psychology Clinic and founding Director of the Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction.
His research focuses on improving clinical practices and policies related to addiction, mental health, homelessness, and public health. The Somers Research Group, internationally recognized, conducts large-scale studies, randomized trials, and population-level analyses across over 150 publications. Key projects include the At Home/Chez Soi initiative addressing homelessness and mental health. Dr. Somers pioneered advanced information systems for health surveillance and policy evaluation.
In 2018, he received SFU’s Excellence in Supervision Award. His work spans themes like addictions prevalence, public health strategies, housing solutions, and life trajectories. He teaches courses such as HSCI 180 D100 (Drugs and Society).
