Dr. Nicolas Bommarito is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Simon Fraser University (SFU). His research focuses on virtue ethics, moral psychology, and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy, particularly exploring themes like modesty, anger, and patience. He holds a Ph.D. from Brown University, a B.A. in philosophy with High Honors from the University of Michigan, and a Tibetan language certification from Tibet University.
His work bridges Western ethical theory with Buddhist philosophical traditions, with recent publications analyzing Śāntideva’s texts and contemporary debates on moral emotions. He teaches courses such as PHIL 357: Selected Topics, PHIL 150 D100 (Great Works in the History of Philosophy), and PHIL 342 D100 (Topics in Asian Philosophy).
Key research contributions include Seeing Clearly: A Buddhist Guide to Life (2020) and Inner Virtue (2018), alongside articles on topics like ‘Virtuous and Vicious Anger’ and ‘Imaginative Moral Development.’ His scholarship emphasizes ethical living through Buddhist frameworks and the role of attention in epistemic virtues.
