Pamela Stern is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Associate Dean, Policy and Curriculum in Graduate Studies at Simon Fraser University’s Sociology & Anthropology department. She holds a PhD from UC Berkeley and MA/BA from University of Pittsburgh and Florida, respectively. Her research focuses on citizenship, urban heritage, and the history of anthropology, particularly in Canadian Inuit contexts. Current work includes SSHRC-funded projects on Inuit ethnography and municipal heritage reconciliation.
Her research examines citizenship through employment and state relations, with fieldwork in Ulukhaktok (NWT), Cobalt (ON), and New Westminster (BC). Key themes include post-war Inuit administration, urban waterfront transformation, and decolonizing heritage practices. She collaborates with institutions like the New Westminster Museum and the University of Toronto on spatial and policy projects.
Publications span critical Inuit studies, urban anthropology, and historical analysis of northern governance. Notable books include The Inuit World (2021) and Reading Cultural Anthropology (2015). Recent articles address Inuit policy, cultural diplomacy, and settler colonialism in mining contexts.
Current grants include SSHRC Insight Grants (2017–2023, 2014–2018) and a Partnership Engage Grant (2019–2021) on decolonizing monuments. She co-led the Reclaiming the New Westminster Waterfront project (2012–2015), engaging community archives and labor histories.
