Annika Airas is a Term Assistant Professor in the Urban Studies Department at Simon Fraser University (SFU), located at Room 2134, SFU at Harbour Centre. Her work focuses on urban planning, policy, and sustainability transitions, with a particular emphasis on intercultural learning and urban waterfront change. She holds a PhD (2016), MSc (2011), and BSc (2009) from the University of Helsinki.
Her research employs a comparative approach informed by Nordic perspectives and diverse global case studies. Current projects include the SSHRC-funded SAGA initiative (2023-2028), investigating sustainability transitions across linguistic and cultural contexts, and prior involvement in the ReClaiming the New Westminster Waterfront project. Dr. Airas emphasizes experiential learning through field trips, workshops, and international field schools.
Publications appear in journals like Cities and Canadian Journal of Urban Research, as well as edited volumes such as Waterways and the Cultural Landscape and Urban Social Sustainability. Her teaching integrates empirical examples from varied historical and cultural settings to analyze urban development dynamics.
