Dr. David Whitehurst is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean, Education (2024-25) in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University (SFU). His research focuses on health economics, health-related quality of life measurement, and economic evaluation methodologies. He has held prior research positions at the Universities of British Columbia, Birmingham, and Keele. Dr. Whitehurst specializes in preference-based measures for evaluating healthcare interventions, particularly in musculoskeletal conditions, spinal cord injury, and chronic pain management. He has designed SFU's first courses on health economics (HSCI 306 & 808) and contributed to studies on home care for seniors and aphasia outcomes.
His work integrates clinical research with economic analyses, emphasizing accessibility of health measurement tools. Key projects include natural experiments on cycling infrastructure equity and cost-effectiveness studies for opioid use disorder treatments. Dr. Whitehurst's publications span 20+ years, addressing topics like EQ-5D validation, spinal cord injury quality of life, and stratified care for low back pain.
He collaborates with institutions like the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and has expertise in interdisciplinary teams such as the Somers Research Group and Planetary Health Research Group. His teaching focuses on translating complex economic concepts into practical healthcare decision-making frameworks.
