Julian Knop serves as Visiting Professor for Criminology and Law in Social Work at ASH Berlin since 2023. Based in Room 421, he contributes to academic discourse through teaching and research while maintaining active engagement with practical applications of criminological theory. He also serves on the Commission for Academic Staff (KAMA) and holds leadership roles in offender assistance initiatives.
Knop earned his Doctorate from the Faculty of Law at the Free University of Berlin (2019) with research focused on juvenile correctional services, following a Master's degree in International Criminology (2014). His academic journey began with studies in law and criminology at the University of Hamburg and the University Library of Barcelona.
His research program examines critical intersections between criminal justice systems and social work practice, with particular emphasis on juvenile justice contexts. Knop consistently addresses taboo subjects within correctional environments, challenging conventional approaches to offender rehabilitation and legal frameworks. His work demonstrates a commitment to human rights perspectives within penal systems, especially regarding marginalized populations.
Knop's recent publications reveal a cohesive research trajectory examining access to justice mechanisms, sexuality in juvenile detention settings, and debates surrounding the criminal responsibility of minors. His scholarly contributions often bridge theoretical frameworks with practical implications for policy reform.
Prior to his current position, Knop worked for three years as a research assistant at Humboldt University of Berlin on projects related to Berlin's juvenile correctional system pedagogy. During his doctoral studies, he co-founded Tatort Zukunft eV, a non-profit organization providing independent offender assistance in Berlin where he continues to serve as Chairman. He is also involved in the "University in Prison" program at Tegel Prison, scheduled to resume in summer semester 2026.
