Dr Simone Deegan is a Senior Research Fellow in Criminology at Flinders University, affiliated with the College of Business, Government and Law and the Centre for Social Impact. Her work bridges academic research with practical insights from her legal and advocacy background. She holds a PhD in Criminology and a Law/Arts (Biological Sciences) Honours degree from Flinders University, and is a practicing barrister and solicitor.
Her research focuses on juvenile justice, homicide, sentencing policies, and correctional systems. Notable contributions include Australia’s first study on juvenile lifers’ experiences and a seminal book Young Offenders: Crime, Prison and Struggles for Desistance, which won the ANZSOC Christine M Alder Book Prize (2017). Her work has influenced juvenile detention policies, emphasizing human rights compliance and rehabilitation.
Recent projects explore public perceptions of sentencing, alternatives to drug-related arrests, and the impact of incarceration on development. Awards include the Flinders Vice Chancellor’s Medal for Doctoral Excellence (2020) and the Young Tall Poppy Science Award (2024). She actively engages with media and public policy, offering expertise on youth crime, justice reform, and prison conditions.
