Melissa de Vel-Palumbo is a Senior Lecturer and Research Section Leader for Criminology at Flinders University's College of Business, Government and Law. She holds a PhD in Psychology (2018) from Flinders, a Master of Psychology (Forensic) from UNSW (2012), and a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) from Adelaide University (2009). Her research focuses on the intersection of psychology and criminal justice, particularly rehabilitation of offenders, public attitudes toward crime, and punitive policies. She leads projects funded by Corrective Services NSW and SA’s Department for Correctional Services, including prison-based desistance interventions and digital tools for community corrections officers.
Research interests include psychological processes underlying behavioral change, punishment theory, and biases in criminal justice decision-making. She is an affiliate member of the Centre for Social Impact. Awards include the Flinders CBGL Outstanding Achievement Prize (2024) and multiple teaching excellence awards.
Current roles include Research Lead for Criminology (CBGL), ANZSOC Committee member, and Editorial Board member for BMC Psychology. She supervises 3 current PhD students and teaches courses in criminology, research methods, and leadership.
