Dr. Kate Gooch is Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Bath's Department of Social & Policy Sciences. Her research specializes in prison ethnography, youth justice, and criminal law, utilizing qualitative methods to examine violence, illicit economies, and organized crime in custodial settings.
Her current projects include:
- ESRC-funded 'The Rehabilitative Prison' initiative
- International comparative study of prison violence in England, Australia and New Zealand
- Leverhulme Trust research on prison homicide prevention
Publications analyze juvenile prison transitions, debt in carceral systems, organized crime networks, and trauma in youth custody. Her longitudinal study of HMP Berwyn examined leadership, organizational culture, and rehabilitative practices.
Gooch serves on editorial boards of Prison Service Journal and Incarceration Journal, and has advised parliamentary committees and correctional services. She received the Charles Beale Award for Policy Advancement for research impacting youth justice practices.
