Julian Atkinson is a Double Bass Tutor at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, part of the University of Birmingham. He has been Principal No2 Double Bass with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) since 1985, collaborating with renowned Music Directors Sir Simon Rattle, Sakari Oramo, and Andris Nelsons. His career spans over three decades, contributing to the CBSO's esteemed bass section with nearly 250 combined years of service.
Julian’s musical engagements extend to chamber music performances with the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG) and educational roles. He coaches bass sections for the CBSO Youth Orchestra and the Birmingham Schools' Concert Orchestra under the Birmingham Music Service. His training includes studies with Robin McGee at the Royal Academy of Music and additional mentorship from Bill Hoare, David Inglis, and Thomas Martin.
