Julian A. Reed is a Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Furman University in Greenville, SC. He holds a B.A. in Environmental Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, an M.S. in Exercise and Sport Sciences from the University of Miami, an Ed.D. from the University of Northern Colorado, and an M.P.H. from the University of South Carolina. His research focuses on environmental supports for physical activity among youth and adults, and the links between physical activity and academic achievement. He has authored two books and numerous peer-reviewed articles, collaborating on community health initiatives at local, state, and national levels.
Research Interests: His work examines how built environments influence physical activity, particularly in underserved populations, and integrates physical activity into educational settings to enhance cognitive outcomes. Key projects include studies on trail usage, daily physical education impacts on youth cognition/fitness, and community partnerships for health promotion.
Articles: Over 150+ publications highlight trends in environmental justice, trail accessibility, and school-based interventions. Recent work emphasizes longitudinal studies on daily physical education’s effects on fitness and academic performance among minority youth. Collaborations with Greenville Health System and others inform policy and community health strategies.
Grants & Partnerships: Funded projects include the Building Healthy Communities initiative in Michigan and evaluations of the Swamp Rabbit Trail’s impact on public health. Furman University’s support enables community-based research addressing obesity prevention and active lifestyles.
