John A. McArthur is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Studies at Furman University. He specializes in proxemics, information design, and the impact of digital technologies on communication and learning spaces. His research explores how spatial design and digital tools influence human interaction, particularly in educational and public environments. McArthur teaches courses in social media, digital humanities, and innovation leadership. He has authored the book Digital Proxemics: How Technology Shapes the Ways We Move and edited a special issue of the Electronic Journal of Communication on digital interactions in social spaces. His work spans topics like online learning dynamics, placemaking strategies, and the role of technology in public memorials.
Education: Ph.D. from Clemson University, M.Ed. from the University of South Carolina, and B.S. from Furman University. Professional roles include leading Furman’s Innovation & Leadership graduate program and managing initiatives like the Furman in Edinburgh study program. He serves as past President of the Carolinas Communication Association and Chair of the National Communication Association’s Human Communication & Technology Division.
Research interests include digital proxemics, user-experience design, and the intersection of space, technology, and education. His publications analyze virtual classrooms, pandemic-era course design, and the ethical dimensions of technology-mediated communication.
