Timothy Hanks is a Professor and Chair of Chemistry at Furman University, with an adjunct associate professor appointment at Clemson University. He has led groundbreaking research in soft materials synthesis, neural tissue engineering, and bio-inspired polymer systems since joining Furman in 1990.
His work focuses on 3D-printed conducting polymer composites for biomedical scaffolds and polydiacetylene liposomes as colorimetric biosensors for pathogens. As director of Furman’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program, he has mentored over 70 publications and collaborated internationally in Australia, Israel, and France.
Scientific Awards:
- South Carolina Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research (2017)
- Fulbright Senior Scholar (2011)
- Ann Nalley Volunteer Services Award (Southeast Region)
He serves as Awards Chair and Alternate Councilor for the American Chemical Society’s Western Carolinas Section and has organized two Southeast Regional ACS meetings.
