Julia Wester is a Doctoral student in Ethnology at Södertörn University's Department of History and Contemporary Studies, simultaneously working as a Lecturer in teacher training programs. She is affiliated with the VR-funded graduate school Education, Learning and Globalization, a collaboration between Södertörn University, Malmö University, and Uppsala University.
Her research focuses on bodily interactions and norm construction in after-school centers from body phenomenological and emotion theory perspectives. Key areas include children's social lives, gender dynamics, interculturality, and collaboration between after-school centers and schools. Her dissertation investigating physical care practices in school-age educare centers is planned for publication in 2026.
Wester's publication record shows consistent focus on schoolyard dynamics and children's social interactions over the past five years. Her work demonstrates interdisciplinary approach combining ethnographic methods with spatial theory and emotion studies, particularly examining how physical spaces like football fields shape children's social hierarchies and conflict resolution patterns.
She serves as Doctoral student representative on the Research and Postgraduate Education Committee and in the ethnology supervisory board. Additional responsibilities include membership on the program council for primary teacher training with an intercultural profile (2022-2027) and supervising bachelor's theses. Her teaching portfolio encompasses courses on after-school care missions, children's social lives, gender, interculturality, and school-after-school center collaboration.
