Helena Hörnfeldt serves as Associate Professor and Director of Studies in Ethnology at Stockholm University's Department of Ethnology, History of Religions and Gender Studies (ERG). She has been a university lecturer in the Department since 2020 and assumed leadership of the doctoral program in ethnology in 2024. Previously, she worked at Karolinska Institutet (2022-2024) as coordinator for equal opportunities issues and held academic positions at Södertörn University.
Dr. Hörnfeldt's primary research focuses on:
- Emotions and power relations within cultural contexts
- Cultural heritage and intertextuality studies
- Historical and contemporary perspectives on children and childhood
- Normalization processes in Swedish child healthcare systems
- Children's fears as cultural and historical practices
Her scholarly trajectory reveals a methodical evolution from examining normalization in child healthcare (2002-2009) to investigating children's fears in contemporary society (2013-2018), with recent work exploring apocalyptic narratives in children's fears related to climate change and nuclear threats. Her interdisciplinary approach skillfully integrates historical analysis with contemporary ethnographic methods, creating a bridge between past and present cultural practices.
As an educator since 1999, Hörnfeldt has supervised numerous bachelor's theses and directed master's programs in ethnology. Her teaching portfolio spans undergraduate and advanced levels across Stockholm University and Södertörn University, encompassing ethnology, gender studies, and community planning programs. She has served as term responsible for bachelor's courses and course responsible for 'Samtid och Vardag' in Ethnology I.
