Julia Shi, MD, FACP, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in addiction medicine. She serves as Medical Director of primary care services at the APT Foundation and leads research in substance abuse treatment, particularly opioid use disorder and hepatitis C management. Her clinical work focuses on integrating primary care with addiction treatment, operating a nationally recognized model combining methadone/buprenorphine therapy with comprehensive care. She actively mentors medical students, residents, and fellows through the Yale Addiction Medicine Fellowship and Program in Addiction Medicine.
Dr. Shi’s education includes a BSc in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University (1983) and an MD from SUNY Syracuse (1987). She completed her Internal Medicine residency at St. Francis Hospital Medical Center (1992) and a substance abuse fellowship, after which she pioneered buprenorphine clinical trials and opioid detoxification protocols in the early 1990s.
Her research emphasizes improving addiction treatment outcomes through pharmacotherapies, digital interventions, and stress management strategies. Notable work includes studies on galantamine for opioid relapse prevention and varenicline’s effects on alcohol-primed smoking. She is a core faculty member in Yale’s Addiction Medicine Fellowship, advancing educational initiatives for trainees across disciplines.
Dr. Shi has been honored with the Nyswander/Dole Award (2007) for opioid treatment innovation and Yale’s Annual Department Award for Excellence in Teaching (2008). Her work spans over 30 peer-reviewed publications in addiction medicine, pharmacology, and behavioral health, reflecting her commitment to both clinical practice and scientific discovery.
