Kathryn Hawk, MD, MHS, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Chronic Disease Epidemiology at Yale University, with affiliations in the Yale School of Public Health and the Program in Addiction Medicine. She is an attending physician in the Yale New Haven Hospital Emergency Department and a board-certified specialist in both emergency and addiction medicine. Her academic roles include research, clinical practice, and leadership in addressing substance use disorders and the opioid crisis.
Dr. Hawk completed her MD at Drexel University College of Medicine (2010), followed by residency and a research fellowship in Emergency Medicine at Yale University. She holds an MHS from Yale School of Medicine (2016). Her research focuses on evidence-based treatments for substance use disorders, particularly opioid and alcohol use disorder interventions in emergency department settings. Key areas include ED-initiated buprenorphine, naloxone distribution, harm reduction strategies, and implementation science to improve treatment access and linkage to ongoing care.
Her work has been supported by prestigious grants from NIDA, CDC, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and others. Notable achievements include developing consensus guidelines for opioid use disorder treatment in EDs and advancing protocols for extended-release buprenorphine. Dr. Hawk has also contributed to national initiatives like the ACEP Opioid Advisory Network and the Emergency Medicine Foundation’s quality improvement efforts.
Dr. Hawk has received multiple awards, including the Early Career Research Award from the Academy for Women in Academic Emergency Medicine and recognition as one of the '25 under 45 Influencers in Emergency Medicine.' Her interdisciplinary collaborations span addiction medicine, public health, and emergency care, aiming to bridge clinical practice and policy to combat the opioid epidemic effectively.
