University of Oxfordمعرفی
Dr. Julia Craig-McFeely is a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Faculty of Music, Department of Music, specializing in Early Modern English manuscript studies. With over 25 years of experience managing the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM), she serves as Project Manager since 1998 and Director since 2007.
Her research focuses on codicology and palaeography of Tudor partbooks, digital restoration techniques, and archive-quality imaging of fragile documents. She has pioneered methodologies for digitally reconstructing damaged manuscripts and established herself as an international expert in high-fidelity imaging of delicate materials, having consulted for organizations including the National Library of Ireland and the Israel Antiquities Authority.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trajectory in digital manuscript studies, with particular emphasis on the forensic reconstruction of Tudor partbooks (especially the Sadler Partbooks), ethical considerations in digital restoration, and the interplay between physical and virtual archival experiences. Keywords across her work consistently highlight manuscript transmission, scribal analysis, and the technical challenges of digital preservation.
- Award for Facsimile and introductory study of Bologna MS Q.15 (with Margaret Bent)
- Multiple academic awards for DIAMM Publications series
As Co-investigator for the AHRC-funded 'Tudor Partbooks' project and Collaborating Partner for the SSHRC-funded SIMSSA project, she secures significant research funding while directing DIAMM's production team. Her work bridges musicology, digital humanities, and conservation science through practical applications like the Dead Sea Scrolls digitization project and the Royal Opera House's Elisabetta typesetting.
